“I’ve gotten particularly bored with mainstream fashion. When this gets boring, I go back to the drawing table and get to start again,” says Melissa Scianna. She is the owner and designer of De Melis, a clothing company she started from home in Middlefield, Connecticut. Don’t be deceived though, this girl’s got some serious background. Designing since she was 12, Melissa’s first fashion love was the sophisticated Valentino line. She designed throughout high school and even took weekend classes in New York to help ensure her a spot at the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology. She even spent a year in Florence, Italy perfecting her craft and taking in the lessons of the European market.

Founded in 2008, De Melis, is for the modern chic woman. The Fall 2009 collection features suiting and dressy separates in flowing silks and refined wools, and it is all made in New York. The attention to detail on the pieces is exquisite such as the French seaming on her blouses and the snappy lining colors. “These are clothes that you daughters will want to steal,” says Scianna, “they’re classy, bright, and well crafted.”

A special De Melis Spring line is already sold at J. Alden Clothiers in Essex, Connecticut and Melissa is seeking new buyers for the Fall who are willing to take a chance on someone new. Despite the current economy, Melissa believes her line has a place. “Because there’s a uniqueness to it, and an attention to detail, if people enjoy it, they’ll want to buy it. It’s not something you’re going to get rid of after one season.”
